Every build starts with an intention — a sound, a feel, a use, sometimes just a question I want answered. That gives me a place to start. It does not give me permission to ignore what happens next.
I build, test, listen, change things, occasionally break things, and pay attention. Materials behave differently than drawings. Good ideas sometimes fail. Accidents occasionally turn out better than the plan.
Intention starts the process. Observation is allowed to change it. Method follows what works. The specimen is the result.
Over three decades of building instruments, working with wood, trying things, breaking things, and paying attention to what happened next has taught me to treat the plan as evidence, not law.
